Jesus

Mary’s Lullaby

Oh! hush thee my Jesus,
the work is behind us,
at last you are lying here
safe in my arms.
The night with its quiet
has fallen upon us
and God and your parents
will keep you from harms.
Now sleeping, now dreaming,
don’t worry my darling,
Ah, sweet little saviourchild
be at your ease.
A star shining brightly
looks downward to find you,
a baby, our baby,
my baby, at peace.

Living for Christ Call to Worship

We come to worship
because for us to live is Christ.
We live for Christ,
we live by Christ,
we live with Christ,
we live through Christ,
we live in Christ.
God of grace,
let Christ be praised
in all we say and do,
in all we think and speak,
in this hour of worship
and in every moment of our lives. Amen.

A Confessional Prayer

Gracious God,
we confess before you our complicity in the sins of this world,
sins which Jesus felt in his own body and soul.
Our hands are not clean.
We confess that we have desired power and status,
and have neglected our duty as your servants.
We have allowed ourselves to become preoccupied
with things we own or want to own,
freely putting on the chains of consumerism.
Open our eyes to the way our lifestyles
affect and shape the suffering of those here and far away.

Pay Attention Call to Worship

Listen up, all you people!  Pay attention!
Everyone…from highest to lowest,
the proud and humble together,
tune your ears to hear good news!
Christ is revealed in worship!

We come with hope and open ears
to meet the One who is our all in all.
Come Lord Jesus!

Giving and Receiving Offering Prayer

We are the Receivers,
receivers of love
receivers of grace
receivers of Jesus.
We are the Givers,
giving where we see a need,
giving out of the bounty we have,
giving as followers of Jesus.
God, we give these offerings for the work of your kingdom,
with humble thanks for mercies received.

Born into Darkness

Jesus is born into darkness,
a darkness that’s over the deep:
the deep sorrowing of our world,
the mourning over murdered children,
the soft sobbing of the hungry,
the wailing over bombed cities,
the despairing over a polluted earth,
the crying over our own sad stories.
On our darkest Christmas eve,
when we’ve forgotten what light looks like,
a baby is born. …

This Christmas Call to Worship

We give thanks to you God,
for the body of a tiny baby,
life and breath in a tiny ribcage.
Immanuel, God with us,
a promise of salvation.
We give thanks
for loving parents,
for the light of a star,
for the radiance of angels,
for the running feet of shepherds,…

Jesus, arrived at last

he baby emerges
like every baby:
wet, naked and wrinkled,
mouth opening for breath,
lungs expanding like a wet butterfly,
fingers stretching, eyes blinking.
The first wailing cry.

Arms cradle,
hands touch each limb,
smoothing, cleaning, swaddling.
Two adults weak with relief,

Wallet Offering Prayer

We are entirely yours God;
life and breath and heart and soul.
We hold our wallets in our hands;
we find here the power to buy,
and the power to give.
All power we have is a gift from you.
We give this offering generously
in the spirit of Christ who gave
life and breath and heart and soul to you,
freely and with deep love.  Amen.
